Innovations and Challenges in Poultry Health: A Conversation with Dr. Marc Cayol

Poultry Creations Magazine is excited to present an exclusive interview with Dr. Marc Cayol, the Global Animal Health Director at Andreas Pintaluba S.A. (APSA). With a Ph.D. in Physiology and over 28 years in animal health, Dr. Cayol began his career at Pfizer Animal Health, which later became Zoetis, where he played a pivotal role in the development and introduction of vaccines for ruminants and swine across various regions.

Since joining APSA in 2016, he has led significant advancements in livestock nutrition and health. In this interview, Marc shares insights from his career, discusses APSA’s efforts to reduce antibiotic use, and highlights their collaboration with Nanovet Nutrition in India.

This exclusive interview features a compelling conversation with one of the leading experts in animal health.

Poultry Creations: Can you tell us about your journey in the animal health industry, from your beginnings at Pfizer Animal Health to your current role at Andrés Pintaluba SA?Dr. Marc: After completing my Ph.D. in Biochemistry/Physiology, I immediately began my career in the animal health industry at Pfizer Animal Health, which later became Zoetis. Over 20 years, I held various roles in commercial, technical, and marketing capacities. I started with the French organization, moved to the US for a year, and then returned to work at the international level. In 2016, I joined Andrés Pintaluba SA, a well-known European company based in Reus, Spain. Andrés Pintaluba SA (APSA) is part of the larger Pintaluba Group. We manufacture and distribute our products worldwide.

Poultry Creations : As the Global Animal Health Director at APSA, what are your main responsibilities and daily activities?
Dr. Marc: Each day brings new challenges. With the production and distribution of products in many countries, we face a variety of tasks daily. Being a company that manufactures its own products makes things easier. However, I am not alone in this; we work as a team. This includes the Manufacturing, Regulatory, and Export Departments, as well as our laboratory. Additionally, we have Area Managers from the Health Division, each managing a specific zone in the world. We also have one Area Manager based in India.

Poultry Creations: What are some of the strategic initiatives you have implemented at APSA to enhance animal health solutions?
Dr. Marc: There are two aspects to this question:
1. From a supply standpoint, with the increasing demand for our products, I have contributed to a strategic decision to increase our production capacity. This has resulted in LEK Veterina, a company based in Slovenia, joining the Pintaluba Group. This represents a significant step forward in increasing production capacity for liquid products, vitamin and mineral premixes, and gaining access to technology for manufacturing nutritional products such as water-soluble powders.

2. From a product standpoint, one of the key initiatives has been the introduction of the ApsaGut solution in many countries. ApsaGut is a range of products based on esterified fatty acids designed to optimize intestinal health.

Poultry Creations: What major trends do you see currently shaping the poultry health industry, particularly in regions like Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East?
Dr. Marc: There are many companies producing products and solutions for animal health and poultry farms, with production taking place in diverse territories. I am observing two trends that often conflict with each other. End users and farmers sometimes look for the cheapest options, but they are also sensitive to quality. Not all products available on the market can claim the same quality standards that we, as a European company, have to follow. The value we bring is that Andrés Pintaluba Group holds certifications such as GMP, ISO, FAMI-QS, etc. Therefore, while the price of our products may not be the cheapest, customers are realizing that we supply high-quality products that benefit their animals and the economic viability of their farms.

Poultry Creations: What are the biggest challenges facing poultry health today and how is APSA addressing these challenges?
Dr. Marc: The biggest challenge that the poultry industry is facing globally is the required reduction in the use of certain products like antibiotics, alongside the consumer demand for healthy food. Antibiotics will never be banned as they are essential for the survival of animals, but prudent use should guide every farm to ensure their availability in the long run. In India, APSA is commercializing feed supplements administered in drinking water and feed. We are also considering registering some treatment products. Additionally, we have developed solutions that can be used preventively to at least reduce, if not replace, the use of antibiotics. ApsaGut is a good example of how APSA is addressing these current challenges. It aims to manage intestinal health while reducing the use of antibiotics in prevention.

Poultry Creations: How you see development in Indian market? What are the initiative you are looking into.
Dr. Marc: I visit India regularly and see a strong demand for innovative and natural solutions. The market is evolving towards more sustainable and efficient practices. We are focusing on developing products that meet these needs, including natural health solutions and partnerships with local organizations to address specific challenges and enhance farm productivity.

Poultry Creations: Could you please elaborate more about collaboration with Nanovet Nutrition in India. What initiative both the companies are going to take to add value to Indian producers.
Dr. Marc: APSA and Nanovet Nutrition are joining forces in India to focus on the key segment of gut health. APSA will supply the products, while Nanovet leverages its extensive network of customers and professionals to promote the benefits of our solutions, such as ApsaGut. Without Nanovet, it would be challenging for us to effectively conduct technical promotion in a country like India. Through Nanovet’s field presence and customer connections, we are confident that our solutions will reach a wide range of producers, delivering significant benefits to their operations.

Poultry Creations: What advancements do you foresee in the next five to ten years in the field of poultry health?
Dr. Marc: In any R&D project, it is challenging to predict which specific projects will successfully translate into products. However, as mentioned before, the field of investigation is definitely moving towards natural and effective solutions.

Poultry Creations: What advice would you give to young professionals aspiring to enter the animal health industry?
Dr. Marc: I don’t have direct experience running a farm, but I view it as a vital market segment since we all play a role in feeding the world, and producers have an important role in this chain. Having spent 28 years working in the animal health industry, I can say that it is a field I know and enjoy. It offers the opportunity to interact with people from diverse countries, making it a rewarding career. Being part of this industry means contributing to the food chain and making a significant impact.

Poultry Creations: How do you view the current state of the poultry market in India, and what potential do you see for growth and improvement?
Dr. Marc: I cannot make a definitive judgment on the current state of the poultry market in India. However, as we observe in many markets, the trend is moving towards greater integration of poultry farms. This shift is likely to offer advantages for farmers but will also introduce more constraints, particularly in terms of performance and biosecurity, which they need to be prepared for.

Poultry Creations: What message or suggestions would you like to give to Poultry Creations Magazine to help us improve and better serve our readers in the poultry industry?
Dr. Marc: I discovered Poultry Creations Magazine during a week spent in Haryana and found it very interesting. The magazine offers valuable tips, shared experiences, and technical articles. It provides a good mix of information for readers. Congratulations to the PCM Team for producing such an informative publication.

Transforming Soy Production: Mr. Lance Rezac’s Key Insights from the Global U.S. Soy Summit SoyConnext – Ricky Thaper (www.rickythaper.com)

The Global U.S. Soy Summit SoyConnext, held from August 19-21, 2024, at the Hotel Marriott Marquis in San Francisco, was a pivotal event for discussing the future of sustainable nutrition. With over 800 international buyers and sellers of U.S. soybeans in attendance, the summit served as a vibrant platform for showcasing innovations and fostering collaborations within the soy industry.

One of the key figures at the summit was Mr. Lance Rezac, USSEC Chairman & U.S. Soybean Farmer. Mr. Rezac is a distinguished leader in American agriculture, managing the Rezac Land & Livestock Company in Onaga, Kansas. His 20,000-acre farm is dedicated to growing soybeans, corn, and wheat, and also features a state-of-the-art cattle and piggery operation, including advanced practices like silage production for cattle feed.

A fifth-generation farmer, Mr. Rezac’s agricultural journey began early in life, continuing a long-standing family tradition that now extends to his children, the sixth generation in agriculture. Since 1996, he has been a proponent of genetically modified (GMO) soybeans, reflecting a broader trend in the U.S., where 95% of soybean crops are GMO. His farm is equipped with modern technology, including satellite imagery and drones, which enhances precision in crop monitoring and operational efficiency.

During the summit, Mr. Rezac had a notable discussion with Mr. Ricky Thaper, Member of USSEC Trade Team from South Asia. This conversation provided valuable insights into the competitive advantages of U.S. soybeans on the global stage. Mr. Rezac highlighted several factors that set U.S. soybeans apart, including their exceptional quality, sustainability, and overall value.

Mr. Rezac shared impressive statistics demonstrating the progress U.S. soy farmers have made in sustainable practices. Since 1980, U.S. soy farmers have reduced greenhouse gas emissions per bushel by 42%, improved irrigation water use efficiency by 60%, and increased land use efficiency by 47%. Energy use efficiency has improved by 45%, and soil conservation efforts have enhanced by 34%. Soy production has surged by 130% to meet rising global demand.

Mr. Rezac also told of significant environmental achievements. Between 1997 and 2017, U.S. forestland expanded by 742,000 hectares, while cropland decreased by 3.6 million hectares. Approximately 15% of U.S. farmland is now reserved for conservation, forest development, and wildlife habitat, highlighting a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.

In discussing the factors contributing to the high yields of U.S. soybeans, Mr. Rezac emphasized the importance of technology, including drones and precision agriculture tools, which enable farmers to monitor crop health and optimize input usage with great accuracy. The use of genetically modified seeds has been key to achieving high yields and resilience against pests and diseases. U.S. farmers also produce non-GMO soybeans to meet diverse market demands.

Mechanization and advanced farm equipment further enhance efficiency, improving planting precision and reducing labor costs. Sustainable practices such as cover cropping, crop rotation, and zero-till farming are essential for maintaining soil health and minimizing environmental impact.

Mr. Rezac’s insights at the SoyConnext summit highlighted a comprehensive approach to modern agriculture, blending technological innovation with sustainable practices. This approach ensures that U.S. soybeans remain a top choice for international markets, reflecting a broader commitment to advancing global nutrition and environmental responsibility.

” The summit underscored the ongoing excellence of U.S. soy, driven by a community of farmers and industry leaders dedicated to shaping the future of agriculture while upholding strong sustainability principles. The confidence and trust that my peers have put in me is at the forefront of my mind this week as we will welcome international customers of USSOY from all around the world. In preparation for these interactions, I’m reminded that even though we are in the business of soy; it’s really all about the people and taking the time to listen to their needs and working toward solutions together. In my mind, that’s what opens doors and will lead to win-win scenarios for U.S. farmers, for our customers, and for our growing world.”

Their unwavering commitment to excellence and their tireless efforts to advance the industry have served as a constant source of inspiration and motivation, shaping my approach to leadership and advocacy within the sector.

One of the most impactful pieces of advice I received from a mentor was to embrace a “never give up” attitude and to always prefer action today over procrastination until tomorrow. This principle has profoundly shaped my professional ethos, guiding me through challenges and encouraging a proactive, resilient approach to both opportunities and obstacles. It has not only influenced my work ethic and decision-making but also my leadership style, inspiring me to instill the same values of determination and urgency in my team. Moreover, my journey has taught me the profound importance of fostering a team environment where success is shared and celebrated collectively. Additionally, I aim to stay updated on industry trends and consumer preferences, I use a combination of methods. I regularly analyze market research and consumer feedback with my team to spot emerging trends. Attending industry conferences and workshops helps me stay informed about innovative practices and challenges. This approach ensures that our marketing strategies remain relevant and effective in the ever-changing poultry and livestock market allows us to anticipate market shifts and adapt our strategies accordingly. By focusing on strategic growth initiatives and fostering collaborative partnerships, I am confident that we can achieve our targets and continue driving success in the region.

Poultry Creations: In your career, are there any decisions or paths you regret taking?

Reena: While every decision and path in my career journey has contributed to my growth and development, there are certainly moments where I faced challenges or setbacks like feeling overlooked or underestimated in meetings or decision-making processes due to being the only woman. Struggling to find a sense of belonging and togetherness in a predominantly male team environment. However, I choose to view these experiences as valuable learning opportunities rather than regrets. Each challenge has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. Moreover, overcoming these obstacles has ultimately led me to where I am today, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and determination to succeed in my current role in a global marketing team.

Poultry Creations: How do you effectively maintain a balance between your professional responsibilities and personal life?

Reena: Maintaining a balance between my professional responsibilities and personal life is essential for my overall well-being and success. To achieve this balance, I prioritize effective time management, setting clear boundaries between work and personal time. I also make it a point to engage in activities that rejuvenate and nourish me, whether it’s spending time with loved ones. So, one thing I love is traveling the world. There’s just something so magical about exploring new places and experiencing different cultures.

It’s not just about seeing the sights; it’s about making memories with my family that we’ll cherish forever.
And speaking of family, spending time with my son and husband is so important to me. We love getting outdoors, playing sports together, or simply having quality time at home. It’s those little moments that matter. They’re what keep me grounded and remind me of what’s truly important in life.

And then there’s visiting my parents in our village. It’s like stepping back in time. The simplicity of life there, the connection to our roots – it’s just so refreshing. Whether we’re working on the farm, cooking together, or just sitting and chatting, being with my parents brings me so much joy and peace.

I should mention that having a strong support system is incredibly important to me, and I’m grateful for the unwavering support I receive from my husband, parents, and in-laws. They’re always there for me, cheering me on, offering words of encouragement, and helping whenever I need it. Their support empowers me to pursue my goals and dreams with confidence, knowing that I have a loving and supportive network behind me every step of the way. So yeah, that’s how I recharge and take care of myself. It’s all about finding that balance and making time for the things that truly matter to me.

Poultry Creations: In your current role and reflecting on your journey, what’s the one piece of advice you’d offer to other young women?

Reena: One piece of advice I would offer to other young women is to embrace your unique strengths and talents, and never underestimate the value of your voice and perspective. Remember, there is no one like you. In male-dominated industries like agriculture and marketing, it’s important to cultivate confidence in your abilities and advocate for yourself. Seek out mentors and allies who can support and empower you on your journey, and don’t be afraid to take risks and pursue opportunities that align with your passions and aspirations. Remember that your experiences, insights, and contributions are invaluable, and by owning your narrative, you have the power to shape your success.

Poultry Creations: What innovative marketing approaches would you suggest for promoting chicken and eggs in the poultry industry to attract consumers, drive sales, and ultimately increase profits for farmers and industrialists?

Reena: Innovative marketing approaches for promoting chicken and eggs in the poultry industry could include leveraging digital platforms and social media to engage with consumers, sharing compelling stories about the farm-to-table journey, and highlighting the nutritional benefits of poultry products. Additionally, experiential marketing initiatives such as farm tours, cooking demonstrations, and recipe contests can create memorable experiences for consumers and foster brand loyalty. Collaborating with influencers and partnering with local communities can also enhance brand visibility and credibility. Furthermore, emphasizing sustainability, animal welfare, and traceability in marketing communications can resonate with conscientious consumers and differentiate products in the market.

Poultry Creations: How can Poultry Creations magazine improve its content to offer more valuable insights and attract a larger audience within the poultry industry?

Reena: To offer more valuable insights and attract a larger audience within the poultry industry, Poultry Creations magazine could consider diversifying its content to cover a broader range of topics, including industry trends, technological innovations, best practices in poultry management, and profiles of industry leaders and innovators. Incorporating multimedia elements such as videos, infographics, and interactive features can enhance engagement and provide readers with more dynamic and immersive content experiences. Additionally, soliciting feedback from readers and industry experts can help identify areas for improvement and ensure that the magazine remains relevant, informative, and impactful in addressing the evolving needs and interests of its audience.

In an exclusive e-interview by Mr. Ravinder Kumar, Managing Editor of Poultry Creations, with Mr. Ricky Thaper, Treasurer of the Poultry Federation of India, discuss on the current state and future prospects of the poultry industry in India, along with insights into the country’s agricultural challenges and strategies for self-sufficiency.

Poultry Creations: What is the current level of poultry meat production and consumption in India? What projection do you have for the coming years?

Ricky Thaper: Poultry production in India has undergone significant growth in the last four decades, transitioning from conventional farming practices to commercial production systems with state-of-the-art technological interventions.

Currently, the total poultry population in India is 851.81 million (as per the 20th Livestock Census), with egg production reaching around 129.60 billion during 2021-22. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database (FAOSTAT) production data for 2021, India globally ranks second in egg production and fifth in meat production. Egg production in the country has increased from 78.48 billion in 2014-15 to 138.38 billion in 2022-23, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.35% over the past 9 years. India’s meat production has risen from 6.69 million tonnes (MTs) in 2014-15 (April-March) to 9.77 MT in 2022-23. The annual poultry meat production is estimated at 4.99 MT. The increase in average income and urban population has led to a tremendous increase in poultry demand and steady consumption growth over the years. Poultry meat production was only one million tonnes (MT) during 2001-2002-3. While the poultry sector is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the country, it is dominated by the wet market. According to a report by the Confederation of Indian Industry, the shift in demand from live birds to fresh chilled and frozen poultry products has been rather slow, and processing levels are also at a lower level of 6% of the total production. The aim is to increase processing to 20-30% of the output in the next decade. There is huge potential for India to increase poultry production through rapid improvements in genetic animal health and feeding practices.

Poultry Creations: How much of the supply of cereals and oilseeds is sourced from grains produced in India? Additionally, what proportion of imported grains does the poultry sector require?
Ricky Thaper: India has been self-sufficient in cereals such as rice and wheat, and the country has been the biggest global exporter of rice for the last several decades. In terms of oilseeds, India imports about 58% of its annual requirement of edible oils, mostly palm, soybean and sunflower oils. India’s domestic production of soybean ranks as the second-largest producer of oil after mustard seed. The demand for soymeal is largely met through domestic production. However, in 2021-22, India allowed 1.2 million tonnes of genetically modified (GM) soymeal to help the poultry industry after animal feed prices tripled in a year to a record high. In addition to soymeal, the poultry sector also uses maize as a key ingredient of poultry feed. However, with the government aiming to produce ethanol from maize instead of sugarcane, there may be a shortfall in domestic supplies, which would meet the demand of both poultry and the biofuel sector. India needs to allow imports of GM maize and focus on increasing domestic production as demand from poultry, the starch industry and the biofuel sectors are rising steadily.

Poultry Creations: India is making great efforts to become a self-sufficient nation in agriculture, except in the case of vegetable oils. Can it achieve this challenge, or will it, like China, eventually become a constant importer of certain products, as happened years ago with soybean meal?
Ricky Thaper: India is heavily dependent on imports for edible oil, as currently about 58% of the total cooking oil demand is met through imports. Edible oils (crude oils) such as palm, soybean and sunflower are imported from countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Argentina and Ukraine. Although domestic production of oilseeds such as soybean, groundnut and mustard has been increasing, demand exceeds output. A palm oil mission is underway, but the country will likely continue importing edible oils for the next decade or so. India also imports pulses, including tur (pigeon pea), urad and masoor (lentils), primarily from countries like Myanmar, Mozambique, Tanzania, Canada and Australia. India aims to source urad and tur from Brazil and Argentina and there have been several discussions with South American countries regarding pulse imports. Presently, India’s annual consumption of pulses is around 28 million tonnes, while the country imported 3 MT of pulses in the 2023 calendar year. In the next decade, India is expected to continue its import dependence for cooking oils and pulses.

Poultry Creations: Could you share some insights into the specific challenges you faced as a Third-generation poultry entrepreneur and how you overcame them?

Gaurav: As a Third-generation entrepreneur, one of the main challenges I faced was bridging the generation gap within the family business. Introducing modern techniques and innovations to convince the previous generation required patience and demonstration of the value through small-scale pilot projects. Overcoming these challenges involved building trust through tangible results and showcasing the benefits of embracing change.

Poultry Creations: Power Eggs has become a flagship product for Yojana Poultry Pvt Ltd. Can you elaborate on the process of developing and launching this product, as well as the strategies employed to expand its market presence?
Gaurav: The development and launch of Power Eggs involved a meticulous process aimed at meeting the evolving needs of our consumers while differentiating our product in the market. Here’s a more detailed explanation:

Identifying Market Needs: The process began with market research to identify gaps and opportunities in the egg market. We analysed consumer preferences, retailer concerns, and industry trends to understand the demands of our target audience.

Innovative Packaging: Recognizing the importance of convenience and hygiene, we innovated with the packaging of Power Eggs. We introduced the concept of packaging six eggs in pulp trays with a secure rubber band. This not only ensured the safety of the eggs during transportation but also addressed retailer concerns about handling eggs directly.

Quality Enhancement: Alongside packaging innovation, we focused on enhancing the quality of our eggs. We introduced special additions like selenium-enrichment to provide additional health benefits to consumers, making Power Eggs stand out as a premium product in the market.
Market Expansion Strategies: To expand the market presence of Power Eggs, we employed a multi-faceted approach. This included building our retail and general trade presence one store at a time, ensuring fresh daily supplies, and conducting ground-level promotions to showcase the quality difference. We also established a strong distribution network, collaborating with 30 distributors in local trade, spanning across key regions including Pune, Mumbai, Lonavala, Karjat, and Goa.

Marketing and Branding: Our marketing efforts were pivotal in establishing Power Eggs as a trusted and preferred brand among consumers. We utilized a blend of online and offline marketing strategies, collaborating with celebrities for TV commercials, partnering with social media influencers, and conducting local marketing campaigns. This holistic approach helped us reach a diverse audience and reinforce the brand’s image of quality and innovation.

Continuous Improvement: The process of developing and launching Power Eggs was not a one-time effort but a continuous journey of improvement.
We constantly monitored consumer feedback, market trends, and competitor activities to adapt and refine our strategies, ensuring that Power Eggs remained relevant and competitive in the market
Overall, the development and launch of Power Eggs exemplify our commitment to understanding consumer needs, innovating with packaging and product quality, and employing strategic marketing and distribution strategies to establish a strong market presence for our flagship product.

Poultry Creations: As a leader in the industry, how do you stay informed about emerging trends and technologies, and how do you incorporate them into your business strategies?

Gaurav: Staying informed about emerging trends and technologies is essential for staying ahead in the industry. We actively engage in industry conferences, trade publications, and networking events to stay updated. Additionally, we invest in research and development to explore innovative technologies and practices that can enhance our operations and product offerings.

Gaurav: We envision Yojana Poultry Pvt Ltd continuing to expand its presence and diversify its offerings while maintaining a strong commitment to quality and innovation. To remain competitive and relevant, we are focusing on expanding our distribution network, investing in research and development, and exploring new market opportunities both domestically and internationally.

Poultry Creations: Egg processing is an area of potential growth for your company. What opportunities do you see in this sector, and how do you plan to capitalize on them while maintaining the company’s core values?

Gaurav: Egg processing presents a promising avenue for growth for our company, offering opportunities for product diversification, extended market reach, and innovation. By venturing into processing, we can develop a diverse range of value-added products like liquid eggs and egg powders, catering to varied consumer preferences. Additionally, processed egg products typically have a longer shelf life, enabling us to expand distribution channels beyond local markets to reach regional and national levels, tapping into new market segments such as foodservice and food manufacturing industries. To capitalize on these opportunities while upholding our core values, we plan to invest in advanced processing technology, maintain strict quality control measures, and prioritize sustainable practices throughout our operations.

While pursuing growth in egg processing, we remain committed to delivering products that meet the highest standards of quality, affordability, and customer satisfaction. Our strategy involves a careful balance between innovation and adherence to our core values. We will focus on sustainable sourcing practices, minimize waste generation, and educate consumers about the nutritional benefits of processed egg products. By staying true to our values and embracing innovation in egg processing, we aim to not only seize growth opportunities in the sector but also continue to build trust and loyalty among our customers.

Poultry Creations: How do you propose to boost the per capita consumption of eggs and chicken in our country? Could you outline the strategic steps you believe the industry should take to achieve this goal?

Gaurav: Boosting per capita consumption of eggs and chicken requires a multi-faceted approach. Firstly, there needs to be increased awareness about the nutritional benefits of eggs and chicken through targeted marketing campaigns and educational initiatives. Secondly, the industry should focus on improving accessibility and affordability of these products, especially in rural areas. Additionally, investing in infrastructure, warehouses and cold chain facilities can help ensure the availability of fresh products to consumers across the country.

Poultry Creations: Who have been the key individuals or teams supporting you throughout your successful journey?

Gaurav: Throughout my successful journey, one of the key individuals who has been instrumental in our marketing and sales strategies, as well as our expansion, is my childhood friend, Sohan Choudhary. Sohan and I embarked on this business journey together six years ago and his expertise, dedication and innovative thinking have played a pivotal role in shaping our company’s growth trajectory. From developing effective marketing campaigns to forging strategic partnerships, Sohan’s contributions have been invaluable. His unwavering support and collaborative spirit have been a driving force behind our achievements, making him an indispensable part of our team.

Also, the success of Yojana Poultry Pvt Ltd has been made possible by the dedication and hard work of our entire team, from employees on the farm to those in management positions. Additionally, the support of our distribution partners, suppliers, and loyal customers has played a crucial role in our journey.

Poultry Creations: Finally, as a Third-generation poultry entrepreneur, what advice would you give to aspiring young professionals looking to enter the industry and continue their family’s legacy?

Learn from the experiences of previous generations but also be open to new ideas and technologies that can drive growth and competitiveness in the industry. Building strong relationships, both within the family and with stakeholders in the industry, is also key to success.

Additionally, featuring success stories and interviews with industry leaders can inspire and educate readers, contributing to the overall growth and advancement of the poultry sector.

Ms. Ruby Sharma is a pioneering figure in the poultry industry, leading Vesper Group as CEO and proprietor. Originating from Amritsar, Punjab, she has brought innovation and determination to her role, overcoming obstacles in the male-dominated sector. Her visionary leadership has propelled Vesper to new heights of success, inspiring others with her commitment to excellence and animal welfare.

“To young women venturing into leadership and entrepreneurship in the livestock industry, I advise recognizing strengths and expressing thoughts to supportive individuals. Strengthen mental resilience and seek guidance from experienced professionals for successful navigation in this dynamic field. Keep yourself well-informed about current events. Plan your future and dedicate time to realizing your plans.”
                                                                                                                                                         … Ruby Sharma

Poultry Creations: Can you briefly discuss your educational background and how it influenced your entry into the poultry industry? Furthermore, what prompted your involvement with Vesper Group and your progression to the role of CEO and proprietor?

Ruby Sharma: Growing up in Amritsar, Punjab, I completed my schooling and graduation before moving to Bangalore in 2003. It was here that I began my journey in the poultry industry, initially working with breeder birds in Vesper’s vaccine division. Over time, my dedication and passion for animals caught the attention of my father Dr. Suresh Sharma, the founder of Vesper Group, who mentored me and eventually appointed me as CEO. In 2017, I became the proprietor of Vesper Labs, marking a significant milestone in my career journey.

Poultry Creations: Being a pioneering woman in the poultry industry and a second-generation poultry entrepreneur, what obstacles have you faced in leadership positions and how have you effectively navigated and overcome these challenges?”

Ruby Sharma: Navigating the male-dominated poultry industry presented its challenges. With Dr. Suresh Sharma’s support and our innovative products, I confronted these hurdles head-on. Managing a team of about 20 staff and over 200 production team members, all male was a difficult job. It required confidence-building, empathy, and a resilient attitude. Emphasizing my leadership role and ownership of the company helped foster mutual cooperation and growth among team members.

Poultry Creations: How do you address the challenge of enhancing profitability in your family business, especially within the poultry industry?

Ruby Sharma: Every business encounter financial fluctuation. We have focused on optimizing our workforce, reducing overtime, fostering transparent working conditions, meticulous budget planning, and reducing unnecessary expenses. Efficient management of purchase costs has been paramount, alongside initiatives to boost sales and access new markets, all contributing to bolstering our profits.

Our partnerships with senior product distributors, leveraging their market influence, combined with our established and effective product range, distinguish us from competitors. Additionally, maintaining a strict bad debt policy has been instrumental in sustaining profits. Moreover, making tough decisions and fostering mutual trust with farmers have been key factors in ensuring our business’s sustainability.

Poultry Creations: Could you highlight some of the innovative products or initiatives you’ve spearheaded at Vesper Labs, particularly those aimed at improving poultry health and productivity?

Ruby Sharma: In Vesper Labs, we’ve developed a suite of innovative products. These include RC-Ves, which effectively revitalizes chicks during transportation and in their early life stages. Our Spazyme is a powerful multienzyme formulation, while Cmi Plus stands out as a uniquely potent immunostimulant. Additionally, Altox serves as a reliable toxin binder, targeting chemical and organophosphorus toxicity, while Enerkal provides exceptional support as a liver tonic. We also offer Lumpy-Care for lumpy disease and Swine Fever-Care to combat mortality rates in pig farms. Ves Grow Boost, a water-soluble nutritional feed supplement, promotes sustainable production peaks. Moreover, Respiron is our flagship solution for controlling respiratory diseases, and Heat Relief is our latest product designed to manage summer stress effectively. These offerings have been widely embraced in the market, demonstrating strong sales performance.

These products have low profit margins but offer significant benefits to farmers, enhancing bird health and productivity. This mutually beneficial approach has been instrumental in our success with clients.

We’ve recently launched Vesper Overseas, focussing on marketing Vesper products and expanding the company’s growth into neighbouring countries for export.
Additionally, we have plans to soon launch “Vesper Feed” in select parts of the country.

Poultry Creations: How do you see your role in advancing the poultry industry, especially concerning issues like disease management and product development?

Ruby Sharma: The poultry industry is continuously expanding and stands as a premier sector within agriculture. Eggs are often referred to as “white gold,” representing highly digestible and nutritionally dense health capsules.

Improving marketing strategies and securing better farm gate prices are areas that require attention. Organizations within the poultry sector, acting as stakeholders, should adopt a more assertive approach. They should consider hiring professional spokespersons and becoming more proactive in their initiatives.

Diseases can be effectively controlled with the use of proper health-building products, maintaining optimal body weight, administering vaccines at the correct times, and utilizing superior immune enhancers.
Greater honesty is essential in business dealings and farmers should adopt a more professional approach and seek guidance from industry experts. They should prioritize logical decision-making, investing money wisely to generate greater returns and employing a more calculated approach.

The Vesper team aids farmers in managing issues more effectively, focussing on providing solutions rather than simply mitigating damages.

Poultry Creations: What are some of your upcoming plans or projects for Vesper Group, particularly regarding expanding into new markets or product lines?

Ruby Sharma: Vesper Group has been a pioneer in developing numerous poultry products such as Toxol, Respiron, Cmi Plus, and Notox, as well as livestock products like Masticare, Apthocare, Mastizyme, and Gynaecare. Recently, Vesper has expanded its reach into the aquaculture sector with products like Oxylife, Soil Boost, Pond Boost, and Aqua Kleen. Additionally, we’ve ventured into the pet care market with offerings such as Grow n Glow, Scabisol injection, Dematone lotion, Toxol-C, and dog snacks.

Furthermore, Vesper manufactures ND killed poultry vaccine to combat diseases such as Raniket and its variants. In addition to our animal health portfolio, Vesper has obtained licenses to produce herbal products for human use, including liver tonics and remedies for diarrhea. Beyond healthcare, Vesper’s entertainment division is actively involved in film and TV serial production, along with participation in motorsports.

Poultry Creations: How does being awarded the Young Entrepreneur Award 2023 impact your perception of your contributions to the industry, and how do you believe this recognition reflects the value you’ve brought to the poultry sector?

Ruby Sharma: Receiving the Young Entrepreneur Award at the same event where Dr. Suresh Sharma received the Lifetime Achievement Award was truly a proud moment for me. Having my husband, Dr. Dhirendra Kumar and my children Rashi and Chirag, present to witness and celebrate this achievement made the experience even more special. This recognition serves as both a morale boost and a reminder to continually strive for excellence and push boundaries. It underscores the importance of remaining focussed and committed to achieving higher goals. Additionally, it cultivates a sense of responsibility to contribute further to the industry and society.

This award not only brings joy but also fosters accountability and determination. I’m thankful for the recognition and motivated to keep making meaningful contributions to the industry.

Poultry Creations: What objectives do you aim to achieve through the implementation of a training program for supervisors and managers in the poultry sector, and how do you anticipate this initiative will positively impact the industry?

Ruby Sharma: Through our training program for supervisors and managers in the poultry sector, our objective is to improve industry standards by enhancing knowledge sharing and fostering a sense of pride among stakeholders. This initiative aims to build a more skilled and cohesive workforce, ultimately leading to greater efficiency and professionalism within the poultry industry.

Poultry Creations: What recommendations do you propose for tackling the issue of escalating feed raw material costs and the prevailing lower selling prices within the poultry sector?

Ruby Sharma: The availability of feed ingredients suitable for commercial use is limited and the genetic material of poultry birds is optimized for performance.

Therefore, ensuring their well-being requires the provision of quality feed. Opting for cheap and low-cost alternatives can have detrimental effects on bird health. Birds, even those with a modest body weight of 1.5 kg, are expected to perform consistently, akin to machines. Hence, a highly scientific approach is necessary.
It’s essential to recognize that dead birds result in losses rather than profits. Therefore, modern farming practices must evolve to adapt to this reality. The farming methods of the past three decades are no longer sufficient for future success.

Poultry Creations: Your father, Dr. Suresh Sharma, MD and Founder of Vesper Group, has been cited as a significant influence. Could you elaborate on the role he played in your career development?

Ruby Sharma: Dr. Suresh Sharma is a highly respected figure in the poultry industry, renowned for his pioneering contributions and innovative solutions. As the founder and Managing Director of Vesper Group, Dr. Sharma has played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s growth and success. With his profound expertise and visionary leadership, he has propelled Vesper Group to the forefront of the industry, earning widespread recognition for its quality products and services. Dr. Sharma’s dedication, commitment, and strategic vision continue to inspire and guide the team, driving the company towards new heights of excellence and innovation in the poultry sector.

Poultry Creations: How has your husband Dr. Dhirendra Kumar, a renowned poultry consultant, supported you in your professional endeavors?

Ruby Sharma: Dr. Dhirendra Kumar, a renowned poultry consultant, has been an invaluable source of support in my professional endeavours. His exceptional qualities include being hardworking, dedicated, honest, and punctual. He is known for his straightforward nature, where his “yes” means yes and his “no” means no. With extensive experience in the poultry industry since 1992 and having travelled across the country, he possesses profound knowledge of the field.

Dr. Dhirendra motivational attitude, such as “I am here, just do it,” “When was the last time you did something for the first time,” and “If someone else can, so can you; if no one else has yet, you can be the first,” has inspired me to perform to the best of my abilities. He has always been available to offer technical, professional, marketing and moral support whenever needed. With him around, you can delete the word “fear.”

Poultry Creations: How do you effectively balance family responsibilities while running a business, ensuring success in both areas? What suggestions do you want to give to young women entrepreneurs in this sector?

Ruby Sharma: It’s all about time management. Being present in one place at a time is key. As a businesswoman, many routine activities are sacrificed, but seeing the smiles of both employees and kids alleviates stress. I don’t mix home and office timings and plan things well in advance.
To young women venturing into leadership and entrepreneurship in the poultry industry, I advise recognizing strengths and expressing thoughts to supportive individuals. Strengthen mental resilience and seek guidance from experienced professionals for successful navigation in this dynamic field. Keep yourself well-informed about current events. Plan your future and dedicate time to realizing your plans.

Poultry Creations: What key areas of improvement do you envision for Poultry Creations Magazine to better serve its readers and contribute more effectively to the poultry industry?

Ruby Sharma: Poultry Creations magazine is doing a good job in creating awareness. The articles on pioneering women and second-generation poultry entrepreneurs are particularly helpful for both those already in the industry and those seeking to enter it. Including practical articles that are selected seasonally would be beneficial. It’s also advisable to keep the number of pages limited to maintain reader engagement.
Introducing a monthly page dedicated to breaking news in the poultry industry would keep readers informed about the latest developments. Additionally, having a page dedicated to the common person in the industry would be valuable, as they are important stakeholders as well. Magazine print and color quality are good; please keep up the good work.
Vesper Group – Bangalore wishes you good luck.

Poultry Creations: As a pioneering figure in the poultry industry, what sparked your interest in animal health and nutrition during the early stages of your career?

Dr. Shaveta: In the early stages of my career, I found myself drawn to the world of animal health and nutrition through a combination of personal experiences and a deep-seated passion for Animals.

My initial exposure to veterinary sciences during my bachelor’s degree ignited a curiosity about the intricate relationship between what animals consume and their overall health. However, during my internship focussed on poultry farming that I truly recognized the pivotal role nutrition plays in the poultry industry and that realization struck me when I observed the direct impact of well-formulated diets on the growth, vitality, and disease resistance of the poultry flock. Witnessing the transformation of healthy, thriving birds fuelled my enthusiasm for exploring the science behind animal nutrition further. This prompted my decision to pursue a master’s in animal nutrition, where I delved into the complexities of feed formulation and the potential of feed additives to enhance performance.

As I navigated through my studies, I became acutely aware of the economic challenges faced by poultry farmers, particularly the significant portion of production costs attributed to feed. This realization became a driving force behind my desire to contribute to the industry’s growth and sustainability by optimizing feed efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

My mantra: –
Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Trust your abilities. Celebrate your achievements, learn from setbacks, and uplift those around you. Believe in prayers. Ask for help or advice from your seniors/mentors around you.

Poultry Creations: Can you highlight a specific moment or project in your career where you felt you were pioneering new approaches or breaking barriers in the Animal Healthcare industry?

Dr. Shaveta: Yes, there are many moments throughout the career which were exhilarating. One of the moments want to share that during my days of working with Vetina, as a Marketing Head, I was one the member who conceptualised and implemented the idea for the launch the concept of Pet Insurance. So, there were significant amount of strategic planning, research, and execution. It needs deep understanding of both the market and the evolving needs of pet owners. Being a Vet and a pet parent, I understand, an emotional connect and on the other side about pet diseases, diagnostic services, and age-related considerations which is required for the thoroughness of the approach. Launching the concept has long-term impact is a significant marker of success in Vetina and an evolution in Pet’s health.

Poultry Creations: What are some of the most significant challenges you’ve observed in the poultry industry throughout your career, especially concerning the role of women in leadership?

Dr. Shaveta: At the time I joined this industry there were very less females including Vets and Non-Vets who were working in Private sector in Poultry field. If there are females, they were more positioned in laboratories, R&D houses. In last 8-10 years things have changed a lot and many females are taking challenging jobs of working in fields like Sales and Marketing, Product Development, Business Development. They are working out their niche area. The challenges which I have seen and feel that women’s is work life balance. Being a professional with family obligations is a significant challenge for women in leadership roles. The demanding nature of Poultry Industry, long work hours and irregular work schedule can exacerbate difficulties in achieving work life balance.

Mentorship plays a pivotal role in shaping future in professional development but also help in navigate challenges in work environment. Sometimes, women are under presented in leadership positions. Limited access to resources, sometimes gender biasness. I suggest that females should always sought help from their Seniors in the Industry. I feel blessed that I have always received a lot of support and guidance from senior veterinarians/key stake holders which helps in shaping my career in this Poultry, Dairy and Companion Industry.

Poultry Creations: Given your expertise in animal nutrition, could you discuss any notable innovations or advancements you’ve witnessed that have positively impacted the poultry sector?

Dr. Shaveta: Yes, there are many notable innovations that have led to advancements in this Poultry industry. Advances in Precise nutrition have allowed more tailored and efficient feeding programs in Poultry. Precise Nutrition helps optimize growth, performance, and overall health status of animals. The development of functional feed additives like prebiotics, probiotic, enzymes and phytogenic that enhance nutrient utilization, improve gut health and improve immunity which contributes to overall performance and disease resistance. To control disease challenges use of anticoccidials in therapeutic doses have given an edge for improved gut health and performance. Right rotation and shuttle programs with the usage of high-quality sourcing of Anticoccidials make a difference in the health of birds. With the ever-growing demand of sustainable and environmentally friendly practices there is always need of alternative feed ingredients. Proactive approaches in gut health and enhancing immune systems have become essential components of Poultry Nutrition.

Although I feel, In India, there is much work needed in Nutrigenomics where studies regarding the interaction of Nutrition and Genome have led to deeper understanding how the nutrients influence gene expression in Poultry. The integration of digital technologies such as precision farming tools and sensors for real time monitoring of feed consumption, growth rates and health parameters.

Continuous learning about the industry trends, technological advancements, and marketing strategies. Establish key performance indicators for each area of responsibility. Monitor regularly and analyse performance metrics in your work to track progress, identify areas of improvements and make data driven decisions wherever required.

In all my work experience, I have given edge to learn and adapt in response to changing market conditions, technological shifts and market dynamics. Embracing a mindset that welcomes change and view challenges as opportunities of growth. I must add the most important thing which we overlook during our growth and career is self-care. Balancing multiple responsibilities can be demanding so ensure that you prioritize self-care to avoid burn out and long-term effectiveness.

Poultry Creations: With challenges like high production costs and lower selling prices in the poultry industry, what ideas do you have to make things better and more profitable?

Dr. Shaveta: Yes, it’s a big challenge in current situation. Efficient feed mill management where we can work out accurate feed formulations. Embrace technology advancements such as automated feeding systems, data analytics to monitor and manage poultry production efficiently. To use sensors and IoT devices. Implement robust biosecurity systems. We should invest in energy efficient equipment and practices to reduce utility costs. Vertical integration like owing or partnering with feed mills, hatcheries, and processing plants. This allows better control over the entire production process, potentially reducing the costs and improving quality. Diversification of the products like speciality or organic poultry products that command higher prices in market. Be a market differentiator – sustainable practices, superior product quality to justify higher prices. Supply chain operations must be streamlined to reduce transportation and distribution costs. One should take advantage of various government incentives and grants that support sustainable and innovative practices in agriculture. One of the important tools is risk management to mitigate the impact of market fluctuations in feed and poultry products prices.

Prioritize your safety by choosing good accommodations, reliable transportation and always being aware of your surroundings. There are many tools in this era to stay connected with family like I always share my location with my family so that if I am not reachable, they should know my whereabouts. Attend meetings before and after seminars/conference. Be confident in your interactions. Speak assertively and maintain eye contact with professional appearance. Establish a support network around you. Learn new things continuously, respect cultural differences while you work. Try to take some breaths out of your hectic schedule to relax, unwind yourself.

Poultry Creations: As a pioneering woman in the poultry industry, how do you see the role of women evolving in leadership positions, and what advice would you give to aspiring women professionals?

Dr. Shaveta: There has been a lot of evolution of women in leadership positions like gradual increase of women representation in Poultry Industry in different positions like management, Research and Development, Sales, and Marketing etc. Many companies are giving importance to diversity in leadership as it brings different perspective, ideas, and problem-solving approaches. As more women are participating in education and fields in agriculture and allied sciences has always contributed to a larger pool of qualified professionals. I believe that this trend will continue as many as women will be joining this industry. As we all know that industry dynamics in changing in meat and milk production so there is more opportunity of work to do in the field like analytics, technology implementation and strategic thinking. Always embrace changes. Try to Maintain work life possible as much as possible.
